In Acapulco's heyday, the world's jet set flocked to its Pacific shores as often as to the French Riviera. Hollywood stars came to vacation away from the cameras. Leading man Errol Flynn threw lavish parties aboard his private yacht, Johnny "Tarzan" Weismuller hosted beach bashes, and members of Hollywood 's Rat Pack were regulars. Elizabeth Taylor married Mike Todd here, and Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal spent many holidays in the legendary Las Brisas hotel.
Celebrities still drop in on a fairly regular basis, but it is now also a favorite beach destination for Mexicans. With the new highway it can be reached by road from Mexico City in just three and a half hours.
Mountains meet the sea along the famous Acapulco Bay, which is bordered by jutting peninsulas of rocky cliffs dotted with spectacular homes and hotels. Enjoy the great beaches and the glanorous nighlife. At La Quebrada, the famous cliff divers are dramatically lit-up against the evening sky. |
